Why is coffee a history subject in this city?
Because a UNESCO World Heritage site was built to store it. The Speicherstadt went up between 1883 and 1927 on oak piles and is the largest historic warehouse complex in the world; coffee, tea and carpets passed through it under customs seal. Standing in a roastery there is the shortest route to understanding what the harbour actually did for 400 years.
